The planet Jupiter in astrology is considered to possess a number of qualities which influence events on Earth .
In Western astrology, the planet Jupiter is associated with merrymaking. According to Manilius, Jupiter is temperate and benign, and presides over the stomach. Called "The Bringer Of Jollity" in Alan Leo's book What is a Horoscope?, Jupiter is the ruling planet of Sagittarius, and was also that of Pisces prior to the discovery of Neptune. Many astrologers still consider Jupiter to be the Planetary Ruler of both Sagittarius and Pisces.
When the Norse and Germanic tribes came into contact with the Greco-Roman tradition of gods, they sought commonalities with the new gods in their own. They took the naming system of days of the week after gods from the Southern Europeans as well, giving English speakers the weekday names used today. Some variation on Jupiter is the name most used in other Latin European languages - Jueves in Spanish, etc, but the Germanic languages and English use Thursday, after the name of the god Thor. Zeus/Jupiter's thunderbolts are the connection with Thor, as otherwise Odin is the comparable leader of the gods.
Jupiter is associated with the principles of growth, expansion, faith, prosperity and protecting roles.
