HollyMonument

Monument at the crash site of the airplane carrying Buddy Holly, The Big Bopper, and Ritchie Valens: "The Day the Music Died". The picture description gives directions to the crash site(!)

In the history of rock and roll and rock music, there have been many notable deaths, many quite young but still leaving their mark on music. The following is a list of the names of many such iconic figures, along with the date, cause of death, location, and age at time of death.

The list explodes the myth of drugs as being the largest killer of rock & rollers; vehicular accidents in planes and cars and helicopters are almost exactly tied with drugs for being a cause of death throughout the decades. In the '50s and '60s, vehicles killed many more than drugs did. High drug related death rates are found in the '70s and 2000s; it seems plausible that drug use, at least among musicians, actually increased after the '60s. As the population of popular musicians ages, the normal natural causes, organ failure and cancer, become more prevalent. Rock musicians may do more drugs and travel more, but they are not only as mortal as everyone else, but are vulnerable to the same things.
